Promoting involvment in physical activity summary Summary An individual's involvement in physical activity and fitness is influenced by many factors. All of these extrinsic and intrinsic factors may influence an individual's and a community's values and attitudes towards physical activity and fitness. Socialisation is a term used to describe or explain how society might influence the way we use our leisure time. The sports we play, and other leisure time activities we choose to undertake are influenced by: cultural expectations parental expectations gender stereotypes government funding and priorities private sector initiatives age and expectations myths about exercise the media and the role models it develops sponsorship and its influence over the media coverage of certain sports Socio-cultural factors explain why people first get involved in an activity. Motivational factors explain why people continue to participate in an activity. In some cases, a factor can be both socio-cultural and motivational, for example, fitness, peers, media and social aspects.
