Cardio-respiratory endurance demands
Cardio-respiratory endurance [1] is possibly the single most important
fitness component.
To see if a sport uses this component, look closely at the sport to see
how long the game goes for and the total distance covered by a player. For
example many "on ball" players in the AFL cover between 15 and 20kms in a
game that lasts for 2 hours. This is classic evidence of a high requirement
for cardio-respiratory endurance. The heart rate of a player is also a good
indication of whether there are high aerobic demands. If a player is
working between 65-90 % of their maximum heart rate for most of a game you
can be sure that cardio-respiratory endurance is indicated.
