If you wander along to one of the big running events and listen to the
various conversations taking place, chances are that someone will be having
a conversation that will eventually turn to "What is your VO2 max?" High
maximal oxygen consumption [1] is indeed one of the hallmark
characteristics of great endurance performers in running, cycling, rowing
and cross-country skiing, so it must be pretty important. What is it and
how is it measured?
