    Advantages and disadvantages of fuel sources:- Carbohydrates provide the easiest form for the body to extract energy: glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water and energy. Both fats and protein can do this, too: Fats actually have the capacity to produce more ATP than carbohydrate (gram for gram). However, the conversion process is much less efficient because much more oxygen is required to burn fat. Whilst exercising at high intensities, it is obviously difficult to increase the supply of oxygen to the working muscles and thus difficult for the body to metabolise fats. During exercise, the body regards carbohydrate as the preferred fuel, especially at higher intensities. Large amounts of fats (and to some degree protein) are only used when carbohydrates are becoming depleted
