Physical Education - The conversion of food to energy: protein
Protein
Ultra-marathon runners may burn protein as a fuel source.
Protein [1] is rarely used as a fuel for energy. Its primary use is as
building blocks for muscle. However, under extreme circumstances (e.g.
ultra marathon running), the body will burn protein (together with fat) as
a fuel source. It only occurs when the body is severely depleted of
carbohydrate. The result is a breakdown of muscle tissue, which explains
the muscle depletion of ultra marathon runners, etc.
When fat is burned in the body, it likes to burn with carbohydrate. In
other words, carbohydrate is used as a precursor burner (much like a pilot
light in a gas heater).
When carbohydrate has run out and been depleted, in the case of long
distance events, there is no carbohydrate to act as the pilot light to help
burn fat. As a result, the body will start to break down protein in the
body to act as the precursor. This is why it is so important to replenish
carbohydrate stores (and maintain a high carbo diet during heavy training).

How do you convert protein foods to energy?
