Physical Education - Heart rate
Heart rate
Heart rate is directly correlated to the aerobic system. This is because
it is our heart that pumps the oxygen to our working muscles. It makes
sense, then, that the higher our heart rate, the higher our VO2. These
ratings are given in relation to percentage of our maximum heart rate. Our
maximum heart rate is roughly determined using the equation:
If our heart rate is between:
Resting - 70% maximum HR
The aerobic system is being used. Typical for light activities such as
walking, slow jog, etc. We also say the aerobic system is working in
recovery mode - at this level the aerobic system has the ability to
replenish PC and is breaking down lactic acid.
70-85% maximum HR
Here the aerobic system is being used to supply the energy for working
muscles - i.e. a fast jog or run. It is still submaximal.
85+% maximum HR
Here the body is working both aerobically and anaerobically. The body is
demanding too much energy and the aerobic system cannot supply it all. As a
result, it starts to send more pyruvic acid down the LA pathway in order to
meet energy demands. So both the aerobic and LA systems are working hard to
supply energy.
