    the aerobic system is the biggest system for supplying energy and replenish other systems. It breaks down lactic acid and makes ATP-PC ready again. No harmful product is produced by this system. Provide energy from rest to sub maximum activity.

    This pathway requires oxygen to produce ATP, because carbohydrates and fats are only burned in the presence of oxygen. This pathway occurs in the mitochondria of the cell and is used for activities requiring sustained energy production. Aerobic glycolysis has a slow rate of ATP production and is predominantly utilized during longer-duration, lower-intensity activities after the phosphagen and anaerobic systems have fatigued. It is important to remember that all three of these systems contribute to the energy needs of the body during physical activity. These systems do not work independently of each other, but rather dominate at different times, depending on the duration and the intensity of the activity.

    Aerobic energy system:- If we don't need energy in a real hurry (as you do for a 100 metres sprint) and we need a constant, continuous supply of energy (i.e. triathlon); then the body will break glucose (or fat) down in the presence of oxygen to provide energy. The aerobic system is used when the body is at rest, right through to operating submaximally (jogging/running). It is also used to restore PC stores and to break down lactic acid in the body. Summary: breaks down glucose in the presence of oxygen provides energy for activities ranging from rest to submaximal activities replenishes ATP-PC and breaks down LA that has accumulated in body by the LA system no harmful by-products duration: 1-2+ hours
