lactic acid system provide energy after ATP-PC system running out for longer time, i.e. 2-3 minutes. Suitable for high intensity training that need less than 1:3 work and rest ratio. If the lactic acid level too high, it will cause inefficiency in the muscle work.

What is the lactic acid system?

Lactic acid system (LA system):- If we need energy in a hurry to perform high intensity movements, the body will break pyruvic acid down with no oxygen present (firstly breaking glucose -> pyruvic acid), because there is no time to combine the pyruvic acid with the oxygen. As a result, the LA system can provide energy quickly (but not as fast as the ATP-PC system) for high intensity activities. Drawback: It produces a by-product called lactic acid. This product is not tolerated well by the body, and if levels get too high the body will cease to function at peak efficiency. Summary: breaks down glucose without the presence of oxygen provides energy for high intensity activities (lasting up to 2-3 minutes) by-product is lactic acid - will cause the body problems if levels get too high This system: provides energy for activities such as the 400m sprint (lasting 60 + seconds) sustains high intensity activities after the ATP-PC system has run out
