The media
Over the past twenty years there has been a great increase in the media
attention of outdoor adventure activites. Television has been saturated
with sport and adventure, movies depicting incredible journeys and books
and newpapers tell of stories of the modern day adventurers. As far back as
the myths and legends of the Greeks and Romans the stories of adventurers
have caputred the imagination of the people. These days there is a great
deal of coverage of any adventure ranging form Brigitte Muir's ascent of
Everest to the recent jouney to the South Pole. Most media analysis of
advnture is positive. It paints a picture of excitement, healthy lifestyle,
endurance, challenge, courage and determination. This has had a positive
effect on the participation of people in the outdoors. Much of the increase
in participation in adventure activities can be credited to the media's
portrayal of young healthy people as adventurers in the outdoors.
