Outdoor Education - Minimal impact on the environment
Minimal impact on the environment
Traditionally, adventure activities have used the natural environment
entirely for its own ends, heedless of the consequences. Today we are
beginning to see a change in focus. With examples of minimal impact [1]
camping, climbing and paddling, we are hopefully seeing a change in
attitude. Think about the effect you have had on the environment during
adventure experiences. Everything we do during adventure experiences
affects the environment - the challenge is to minimise our impact. Give
personal examples of impacts you have seen and what different activities do
to the environment. Some examples might be:
* clearing and erosion at the base of popular climbs at Mt Araplies
* plastic and rubbish left in and near the water on the Snowy River
* the development of clearings for camping
* scares made by camp fires and devastation of escaped fires
* track erosion on the Overland track in Tasmania
* water pollution on the high plains
* erosion from 4WD driving in the Otways
* problems with fauna from feeding the wrong types of foods
* road kills of native animals on major tourist roads

The nature will heal by itself, only give them a rest and do not over do them.
What if environmentalist take charge of every adventure site.
