Outdoor Education - Where safety fits into adventure

Where safety fits into adventure

View the video and consider how safety factors and skill influence
adventure experiences.

The safety and wellbeing of any person involved in an adventure activity
is paramount. Whether you are climbing Mt Everest or climbing at the local
gym, safety and risk management must take place.

Safety must be addressed at all levels in the development of the adventure
plan. Before most adventure activities, there needs to be some sort of
safety planning, the effectiveness of which greatly affects the adventure
experience of each adventurer. People in the industry talk of "The Risk
Management Equation" - this refers to the equation that should be used to
ascertain the level of acceptable risk in a program component or activity.
It should be applied after ensuring that within the program component or
activity all minimum required standards have been met, and that the aims
and objectives, and their application, conform to accepted legal, social,
cultural and industry "norms."

Safety must be addressed at all levels in the development of the
adventure plan.
