Historical and contemporary images of adventure
Juze na jana si kama leo.
'The day before yesterday and yesterday are not the same as today.'
Swahili Proverb
The concept of adventure [1] has changed dramatically. If we look as far
back as the ancient civilisations of the Greeks and the Romans, people
strove for adventure through journeys, quests and battles. The great
mythical journeys of Ulysses illustrated a need for challenge and adventure
where people would pit themselves against the elements and gods in order to
achieve fame and honour. It is interesting to reflect on how adventure has
changed over time. In the past, adventure seemed to be tied up with
conquest and exploration. Most adventures were undertaken for extrinsic
rewards of power and prestige; however, slowly as the highest mountains
were climbed, the longest, fastest rivers were paddled and the most
isolated places were explored, people had to find new challenges.
Adventurers needed to find new ways of pushing the envelope. Thus the
introduction of extreme adventure activities - things like skydiving,
heli-skiing, climbing Everest without oxygen, solo climbing, ballooning
over Everest and base jumping at Trango.
