Column and bar graphs
Column and bar graphs often are used in newspaper and magazine articles to
illustrate some data and comments from the article.
They are used to represent data about the weather like the rainfall and
temperatures; about health issues like birth rates and life expectancy;
about social and economic issues like holiday travel by train or plane, the
migration of people into the UK and the trend in population growth in
different cities and regions, and the use of technologies such as mobile
phones; and surveys of sporting interests.
Some telephone and gas companies now include a column or bar graph on
their accounts to help the customer compare their usage during the last
account with their recent accounts and compare their usage now with their
usage for the same time last year.
