Frequency tables with nominal data
Suppose that you conduct a survey of car colours for the first ten cars
that pass the school. The colours of the cars are an example of nominal
data, as they are quite separate and distinct types of data. The data table
might be as follows:
Colour
Result
Red
3 red cars
Blue
1
Green
2
Black
1
White
3 white cars
TOTAL
10 cars
* In mathematics the frequency result counts how many of a certain data
type there are in the survey.
* When the data is the names of things (e.g. colours) it is called
nominal data.
* A bar or column graph is the best way to show the frequencies from the
table, because the gap between the bars or columns emphasised that the data
variables are quite separate from each other.
