Algebra - Speed
Speed
What is speed?
For many people speed means fast; but speed can also be slow.
Speed is a measure of the rate at which distance is covered or travelled.
Imagine how long it takes to walk 5 kilometres; this takes a long time at
a slow speed. Imagine how long it takes to drive a car 5 kilometres; this
takes a shorter time at a faster speed. Imagine a jet aircraft travelling
over the same distance of 5 kilometres; this takes a very short time at a
very fast speed.
The average speed is calculated by the formula:
where_ s_=average speed; _d_=distance travelled, and;_ t_=time taken
