The pulley system shown below is released from rest:

a. Draw the forces acting on the system.

b. Write equations of motion, and obtain an expression for the
acceleration of the system.

c. How fast is the 2kg mass travelling after 2 seconds?

d. Find the velocity of the 3kg mass when it hits the ground after
travelling 6m.

Answer

a. The forces acting on the system are:

The tensions in the strings (T)

The weight forces on the two masses (3g and 2g)

where g is the acceleration due to gravity.

The direction of motion will be down for the larger mass. The masses will
be travelling in opposite directions, but the magnitude of their
acceleration will be the same.
