(a) Take out any common factors
(b) Check the discriminant b- 4_ac_
if _b_² - 4_ac_ < 0 the expression cannot be factorised
if _b_² - 4_ac_ = 0 the expression is a perfect square
if _b_ ² - 4_ac_ 0 the expression can be factorised
(c) If the discriminant is positive try "trial and error method"
(d) If "trial and error method" is not possible for the general expression
(e) Important Identities
(_x ± y_)² ≡ _x_² + 2_xy_ + _y_²
