Core Mathematics - Geometric sequences
Geometric sequences
an increasing geometric sequence
This unit of work aims to help students with identifying geometric
sequences. It outlines the process of finding terms in increasing and
decreasing geometric sequences and gives a number of practice questions for
revision.
A geometric sequence is a sequence in which the ratio of each term to the
preceding term is constant, that is it has a common ratio.
A geometric sequence/progression will at times be referred to in
abbreviated form as a G.P.
A geometric sequence/progression will at times be referred to in
abbreviated form as a G.P.
If a = the first term and r = the common ratio, the sequence becomes:
RULES:
To find the n term
To find the common ratio
The following pages contain a number of examples that will help you to
identify a geometric sequence and find terms in decreasing and increasing
geometric sequences.
