Core Mathematics - Strength of association
Strength of association
Strength and type of association. Click on labels to view individual
graphs. Click on show all to compare all graphs
Scatterplots can show no relationship between two variables, a strong
relationship or anything in between.
Scatterplots can represent either a linear or non-linear relationship.
Linear relationships can show a_ positive trend _(as x increases, y also
tends to increase) or a _negative trend_ (as x increases, y tends to
decrease).
Scatterplots can also demonstrate the strength of association between two
variables, that is:
* if the points form a linear pattern, the relationship between the two
variables is strong
* if the points are scattered with no apparent pattern, there is no
relationship between the variables
