Core Mathematics - Back-to-back stemplots

Back-to-back stemplots

Back-to-back stemplots are used to display the relationship between a_
numerical _variable (height, for example) and a_ categorical_ variable with
two values (gender, for example).

Two classes at Birdswood Secondary School sit a common maths test. The
results are displayed below:

Class A: 42 63 51 72 81 92 49 70 63 90 83 75 41

Class B: 58 72 81 65 55 79 63 72 69 80 85 75 70

Numerical value - score on maths test

Categorical value - Class A or Class B

Construct a back to back stem and leaf plot to display the data.

Comments: The back-to-back stemplot enables comparisons between classes.
Note the difference in the spread of the scores in each class.
