Core Mathematics - Percentaged tables

Percentaged tables

Percentaged tables can be used to display the relationship between two
categorical variables.

A survey of 200 people was conducted to investigate the relationship
between gender and mobile phone ownership. The results are shown below:

The dependent variable (phone ownership) is in the left-hand column; the
independent variable (gender) is in the top row.

Create a percentaged table of the data.

Figures must be percentaged by dividing each category value by the column
total. In the first cell calculation, we are calculating the percentage of
males who own a mobile phone - so we divide male phone owners (80) by the
total number of males (120).

From the percentaged table, it can clearly be seen that a larger
percentage of males (66.6%) than females (25%) own a mobile phone.
