Chemistry - Gravimetric analysis
Gravimetric analysis refers to analytical procedures where the main
experimental measurements are the masses of two or more substances.
Common calculations include:
_(i) Determination of the percentage, by mass, of a particular element or
compound in a sample._
_(ii) Determination of empirical and molecular formulae._
Use the following questions and activities to further your understanding
of gravimetric analysis. A number of questions have been provided for you
and answers can be found by clicking on the links labelled 'Answer' at the
bottom of each page.
Determine the percentage, by mass, of oxygen in hydrated copper (II)
The same principles apply to the detemination of the percentage, by mass,
of an element or compound in a consumer product, as by gravimetric
analysis. We need to detemine the mass of the element or compound in a
known mass of the sample of the consumer product.
