A sample of sodium chloride, NaCl, is known to be contaminated with barium
hydroxide, Ba(OH)2. In order to determine the degree of contamination, 2.0
g of the white solid was dissolved in 250 mL of distilled water. 25 mL
aliquots were titrated with 0.050 M HCl(aq) and an average titre of 19.45
mL was obtained.
In a separate experiment, 5.0 mL of 0.050 M H2SO4(aq) was added to a 25 mL
aliquot taken from the original solution. The precipitate of BaSO4 which
was obtained was then dried and weighed.
(a) Calculate the percentage, by mass, of Ba(OH)2 in the original mixture.
(b) Calculate the mass of BaSO4 obtained.
