Biology - Introduction
Introduction
This resource covers the role of the pharynx, oesophagus, stomach, small
and large intestine and liver in the process of digestion. Let's begin with
the role of the pharynx and oesophagus.
The food bolus [1] moves from the pharynx [2] to the stomach in a 25 cm
long muscular tube, called the oesophagus. The oesophagus has two sets of
muscles that rhythmically contract and relax forcing the bolus down the
oesophagus. This movement is called
Peristalsis is capable of pushing food along the oesophagus even against
gravity. It is possible for you to eat while standing on your head.
The walls of the oesophagus produce mucus to make it easier for the bolus
to move down the oesophagus. It also helps reduce the amount of damage the
bolus would do to the wall of the oesophagus as it moves along.
