Biology - The importance of surface area and volume
The importance of surface area and volume
Cells absorb useful substances and rid themselves of wastes [1] through
their surface. The surface area of a cell [2] determines the rate at which
substances can enter and leave the cell. In other words, the surface area
determines the rate of supply of necessary materials and the rate of waste
removal.
As cell volume increases there is a greater demand for substances such as
oxygen and to rid the cell of wastes (e.g. carbon dioxide). Volume
determines the demand for supply of materials and waste removal.
