Having damage to the vision in association to the cortex of the right hemisphere affects the visual recognition of familiar objects. I am sure this would be frightening, not being able to recognize familiar people, places, or things.

what could be the main cause of the damage?

Occipital lobe is important because correctly is what you're seeing with your eyes.

Psychology -> Cerebral hemispheres: occipital lobe Occipital lobe This lobe is located at the back of the head. The primary function of the occipital lobe is seeing. Visual input ultimately reaches the occipital lobe of the cortex where cells communicate with one another extensively in a rich processing network. Damage to the primary visual cortex of the occipital lobe produces blindness. Damage to the visual association cortex (which includes parts of the parietal and temporal lobes, as well as the occipital lobe) of the left hemisphere affects the ability to recognise details of a visual scene. However, damage to the visual association cortex of the right hemisphere affects the visual recognition of familiar objects.

occipital lobe is located at the back of the head. The primary function of occipital lobe is for visual or seeing. Its work is to generates visually substance which empowers all the cells to collaborates effectively ,in order to transmits an adequate current which the brain needs for the eyes to see well. That means that if damage dare occur , it must lead to blindness automatically.

Occipital lobe damage = blindness. Temporal/occipital lobe damage = detail recognition impairment, visual recognition of familiar objects impaired.
