William James believed that our thoughts and feelings are linked and constantly flowing like a river. That could be true because there are situations where people cannot "turn their brain off," and are constantly thinking. Even when our brain is "off" we still dream. And the thought of nothing is still a thought. Also, one thought triggers another which triggers another. A person can go from seeing a peanut butter jar to remembering to call their grandmother because she used to make peanut butter cookies.

Psychology -> Streams of consciousness Streams of consciousness William James. William James. James's description of streams of consciousness. William James (1842-1910), an American psychologist, likened consciousness to a stream or river and called the mind a 'stream of consciousness'. He saw consciousness as a stream that was continuous and ever flowing, not disjointed. James believed that our thoughts, sensations, images and feelings are continually blending into each other, always changing and, like a stream, never ending.
