Physics - Sound is a longitudinal wave

Sound is a longitudinal wave

Sound waves are not transverse waves but longitudinal waves [1].
Longitudinal waves are defined as waves that involve a transfer of energy
parallel to the direction of the vibration of the molecules carrying the
wave. Usually when sound waves reach our ears the medium that has carried
the sound wave to us is the air. The medium that is vibrating to pass on
the wave consists of the air molecules themselves. The air molecules
vibrate parallel to the direction of travel of the sound wave.
