Factorisation process for quartics
(a) Take out any common factors.
(b) Look for possible use of "difference of perfect squares" - DOPS. This
pattern is also known as "difference of two squares" - DOTS.
(c) Check the graph of y=P(x) (using your graphics calculator) to see if
there are any "zeros" or X-intercepts. It is possible that the quartic
expression may not be factorisable if no "zeros" exist graphically. Even
though it may be tedious, the Factor Theorem and long division can still be

(e) Some quartic expressions can be treated as quadratics. A typical
example of this is illustrated by the expression x- 7x+6, which can be
thought of as A- 7A + 6 where A=x
