Health and Human Development - Environmental and inherited factors
affecting development and health

Environmental and inherited factors affecting development and health

At fertilisation, 23 chromosomes from the mother combine with the 23
chromosomes from the father to provide the gene pool for the new
individual.

There are a number of environmental and inherited factors that affect our
development and health. Factors that affect our development begin as early
as fertilisation. Our development is then affected by a range of factors
including our socioeconomic status and the environment with which we
surround ourselves.

determine sex, physical characteristics related to body shape, body
size, ethnicity, and deposition of fat, rate of maturation and longevity.

Genes have the information that will determine all the characteristics of
an individual, including rate and timing of growth. Chromosomes carry the
genes, which have the information for the new individual. Genetic potential
is the range of capabilities and capacity inherited by an individual This
potential is then controlled by hormones [1] (also inherited) and moulded
by the environment.
