In 2000 the World Bank admitted that its projects continue to harm the
world's forests, despite a protective policy adopted 10 years ago. A World
Bank study shows that it has largely ignored its own 1991 Forest Policy
when lending for economic development, as it has failed to promote poverty
alleviation, and sustainable development, through its forest related loans.
Projects developed should have truly addressed poverty and protected the
world's forests. Instead they promoted a policy of income production rather
than sustainable development.
