Short and long-term effects of rainforest destruction
If everyone in the world saw themselves as individuals whose actions
have an effect on global commons we would be half-way to healing the
environment
People who live in rainforests have also responded to the destruction of
their homes. Indigenous inhabitants in Southeast Asia, South America and
Africa have all fought for the continuation of their traditional life as
hunter-gatherer or slash and burn farmer. The Penan of Kalimantan, the
Kayapo of Brazil, the Yanomami of Venezuela and the Huaorani of Ecuador
have all struggled for existence against people and companies from outside
their forest. The Penan erected blockades and attempted to hold out the
logging companies. The Yanomami and the Huaorani have fought the intrusions
of mining companies and settlers. The Kayapo have proved that they can make
an income from their forests. Since 1991 they have been trading with the
Body Shop. They collect and extract oil from Brazil nuts and sell it to the
Body Shop.
