English - Reverend Hale
Reverend Hale
Reverend Hale is introduced here in Act One as an "EAGER-EYED
INTELLECTUAL". He is a well studied man who takes his role in life very
seriously. Miller tells us he came to Salem "WITH THE PRIDE OF THE
SPECIALIST WHOSE UNIQUE KNOWLEDGE HAS BEEN AT LAST PUBLICLY CALLED FOR". He
is determined to rid Salem of any signs of the devil, and although he comes
across as pompous, his intentions are good. Hale's role in this play is
very interesting as the audience will witness him undergo an awakening and
come to question the very values he espouses at the beginning of the play.
