English - Abigail continued

Abigail continued

Uncover Act One quotes and consider what they reveal about the character
of Abigail.

Subsequently, when Parris leaves the room and Abigail is left alone with
the girls, her facade drops. She clearly holds power over the girls, and
her influence is evident in the dialogue. She is threatening, aggressive
and violent, "I WILL COME TO YOU IN THE BLACK OF SOME TERRIBLE NIGHT AND I
WILL BRING A POINTY RECKONING THAT WILL SHUDDER YOU". The extent of
Abigail's influence over the other girls is seen at the end of this act
when they follow her lead and denounce certain women of the village as
witches.

Abigail's confrontation with Proctor reveals yet another side of her
character. With him she is flirtatious and taunting, her desire for him
made obvious through her dialogue and body language. When Proctor makes it
clear that their affair is over, "I'LL CUT OFF MY HAND BEFORE I'LL EVER
REACH FOR YOU AGAIN" Abigail's mood darkens as she becomes increasing hurt
and resentful. Her relationship with him was an awakening, "I NEVER KNEW
WHAT PRETENCE SALEM WAS" and the audience is left with the clear impression
that she is not going to let things lie. The fact that she has not been
able to manipulate Proctor is reason for her to exert her influence over
the other children even more at the end of the act. Abigail dislikes not
being in control of a situation and when she sees Tituba bend to Hale's
questioning she identifies an avenue with which to regain control and seek
vengeance. With her cry, "I WANT TO OPEN MYSELF! I WANT THE LIGHT OF GOD, I
WANT THE SWEET LOVE OF JESUS!" Abigail is carefully constructing her plan
to ruin Elizabeth Proctor.
