Characters

Many of the characters of _The Crucible_ are introduced in Act One. The
audience is able to determine much about each character from the way s/he
speaks, behaves and interacts with other characters. In addition to this
Miller's commentary provides an explanation of each character's history and
motivations. This commentary, however, does provide a problem for directors
who must decide whether or not to include it in their productions.

Use the attribute table [1]to outline the traits and behaviours of the
main characters of the play. As you read the play take note of the ways in
which the characters change. Add characters as you progress through the
play.

Following is a brief description of some of the main players of Act One.
