Act One, Scene Three Continued

_ Banquo in his caution as a foil to Macbeth._

As Macbeth and Banquo are pondering over what has just occurred, Ross and
Angus arrive to inform Macbeth that the King is pleased with his successes
on the battlefield and has named him Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth is astounded
that what the witches have said has come true. He considers that if there
be truth in him being Thane of Cawdor as the witches promised, then it is
possible that he may become King. Macbeth is scared as he considers how to
fulfill the prophecy. Banquo, however is more cautious, and warns Macbeth
that it may be a trick on the part of the witches to undo him:

Banquo:

" ..OFTENTIMES, TO WIN US TO OUR HARM

THE INSTRUMENTS OF DARKNESS TELL US TRUTHS

WIN US WITH HONEST TRIFLES, TO BETRAY'S

IN DEEPEST CONSEQUENCE."

(lines 123-126)
