Act four, scene three
The location of this scene is England and Macduff meets with Malcolm at
the palace of Edward the Confessor, King of England. Macduff attempts to
persuade Malcom to return to Scotland with an army to contest Macbeth. It
takes some time for Malcom to establish Macduff's loyalty as he is
suspicious Macbeth may be setting a trap. Malcom tests Macduff at first by
acting tyrannically, then they become loyal allies.
Macduff is informed of the slaughter of his wife and children and for the
first time in the play another definition of manhood is provided when
Macduff claims he must grieve and feel it like a man. Macduff vows to get
his revenge and will not rest until Macbeth has been killed.
