English - Rhythm

Rhythm

Coleridge first stresses the child's breathing as he sleeps and as he
does, we realise that the regular in-out movement of breath echoes the
rhythm of the poem itself:

'Dear Babe, that sleepest cradled by my side,
Whose gentle breathings, heard in this deep calm,
Fill up the interspersed vacancies
AND MOMENTARY PAUSES OF THE THOUGHT!' (ll.44-47)
