English - Sound structure

Sound structure

A similar use of sound structure enacting the poem's ideas occurs in the
following lines:

Whose puny flaps and freaks the idling Spirit
'By its own moods interprets, everywhere
ECHO OR MIRROR SEEKING OF ITSELF' (ll.20-22)

Note how in l.22 the first and last vowel sounds are identical ('echo'/
'itself'); the third and fifth likewise ('or/or'); the seventh and ninth
likewise ('ing'/ 'it'). In fact, what we have in this line is a structure
of sounds which themselves constitute an 'ECHO OR MIRROR SEEKING OF
ITSELF'.
