Cells absorb useful substances and rid themselves of wastes through their surface. The surface area of a cell determines the rate at which substances can enter and leave the cell. As cell volume increases there is a greater demand for substances such as oxygen and to rid the cell of wastes (e.g. carbon dioxide). Volume determines the demand for supply of materials and waste removal.
