The technique of applying corrective makeup, uses light and dark colors and shades to contour and highlight the features. It is about creating the illusion that the face has a better balance or proportion. It is a technique that is used to make a symmetrical look, that is seen as beautiful. It can give the eyebrows a more symmetrical look or make the lips appear fuller. These techniques camouflage the imperfections, so that they are less noticeable. It is also referred to as 'camouflage makeup' because of this. It can be used for scars, areas that are darker, and any other features that people wish to hide. This can be anything from a blemish to thin lips. You know how an artist can create pictures that pop out at you like an optical illusion. They look like they are three dimensional, even though they aren’t. They use the contrast between light, dark and shadows, to create the illusion that things are different from what they actually are. This is, in effect, what you're doing with corrective makeup. If you notice in the picture [before and after], eyeliner was used with mascara, to make the eyes look bigger. The brow was filled in, to create an "arch" that elongates the face and gives the eye more attention. A little rouge on the cheekbone, brings it out a bit and gives her a more defined look. Lip liner was used to increase the size of the lips and make them look plump and fuller. A bit of shadow was used along the side of the nose, to make it look thinner. Makeup can dramatically change the appearance of the face and create a look that helps people feel more confident. This module will teach you how you can use makeup to “fix” problems that people have with their appearance. It could be to thin out the nose, elongate the face, brighten the eyes, or increase the fullness of the lips. Part of your job as a makeup artist, will be to know how to improve various features many people are unhappy with. By being able to do this, you will be able to create a new look for someone, in many cases sparing them the trouble and cost of undergoing cosmetic surgery.
