The human skeleton provides support and protection, it is involved in the production of blood cells and it enables motion and locomotion.

The skeleton is made up of long bones, flat bones and irregular bones.

Skeletal elements are made up of several types of connective tissue including bone, cartilage, marrow, blood and nerves.

The piezoelectric effect, which occurs in bones when they are compressed, is thought to aid in the healing of damaged bones.

Bone cells are called osteocytes. They are called osteoblasts when building bone and osteoclasts when tearing down bone.
