    How is scurvy caused?

Scurvey is a disease caused by a deficiency of vitamin C leading to the body degrading as collagen cannot be formed, although the brain is left intact. A vitamin is something that out body cannot synthesise enough of but more doesn't mean better. Vitamin C oxidises and therefore loses it's properties very quickly at room temperature when in contact with the air hence why fresh juice should be kept in sealed cartons in the fridge and hwy fresh fruit is the best form of vitamin C. This discovery helped Britain win the Battle of Trafalgar against France in the Napoleonic wars. Pills are not the best form os vitamin C (Ascorbic acid) as the form and quantity is often not ideal.

What is vitamin c and the limeys?

This is a great story by doctor David Agis about the British captain, James Lind and his army, the 'Limeys'. Soldiers on the ship during the war against the French, started to develop scurvy, which is the breaking up of connective tissue in the body. It causes symptoms such as bleeding gums, peeling and drying skin etc. The amazing discovery of this disease is that it affects all connective tissue in the body, but does not affect the brain at all. People thought, at the time of the war, that the disease is a infectious disease and was transferred on the ship from person to person. This condition is caused by the lack of Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid). The captain, who was very intelligent and had an idea of what scurvy was caused by, tried to carry fresh limes on his ship during the war, which was successful, but in the book that he wrote, he mentioned in the final paragraph that he tried selling the extract of the lime and it did not work. This is simply because Vitamin C is denatured and degraded upon being exposed to oxygen and light, meaning that it didnt work when he tried selling the extract as the vitamin C was already exposed to fresh oxygen and light. This is the reason why limes are usually sold in cardboard boxes,as it eliminates all light and oxygen from affecting the vitamin quality.
