The coefficient of determination (r2) is a numerical value obtained by squaring Pearson's correlation coefficient. It tells us the percentage of the variance of the dependent variable that can be accounted for by its relationship with the independent variable.

The coefficient of determination (r2) is a numerical value obtained by squaring Pearson's correlation coefficient. It tells us the percentage of the variance of the dependent variable that can be accounted for by its relationship with the independent variable. From the example in the previous section (height and weight of Year 12 students), the display from the graphics calculator looked like this. r = 0.976 r2 = (0.976)2 r2 = 0.953 This means that 95% of the variance in weight can be accounted for by variation in height.
