Making conclusions about research
The main factors that influenced initial participation appear to be health
and fitness, and personal challenge, in the 25+ age group, and peers
and school in the younger age group.
To ensure the continued success of the swim, the organisers should
continue to emphasise the health aspects of swimming in the entry form, and
to emphasise that the event is run safely with consideration for different
To encourage the strong cohort of younger swimmers, mail outs to schools
should occur prior to the end of the school year to allow sport
coordinators ample time to organise team entries. Hints on how to arrange
the day and tips for first time swimmers could be part of the information
It appears that extrinsic rewards, like prizes, do little to encourage the
continued participation of swimmers. Most swimmers commented that their
primary motivations were intrinsic. An implication of this finding may
be that media releases and publicity for the swim should focus on the
personal achievements of swimmers, such as, how many times they had
participated. By focusing on the fact that they are not elite swimmers, it
may encourage others to maintain their participation.
Recognition schemes, like the "Shark Bait Club", where swimmers who have
completed 10 swims are recognised, should continue and expand as they
assist with motivating participants to continue in this activity.
The conclusion offers some summary of the main ideas and offers
suggestions for the future.
There are a large number of socio-cultural and motivational factors, which
can influence initial and continued participation. The sample report has
tried to give an indication of how you should discuss these factors and how
they influenced the activity of swimming. Your task is to be familiar with
these factors and to be able to discuss their influence in the activity you
select to investigate in your report. Following is a list of socio-cultural
factors (not definitive by any means) and some explanations to go with
