Sports participation categories
The relevance of electronic and print media coverage in relation to
encouraging participation varies. The media can really do three things for
* increase participation and interest
* decrease participation and interest
* have no apparent effect
The intense media saturation of basketball approximately 12 years ago
certainly had an immediate influence on participation rates. These appear
to have peaked now and there has also been a decline in spectator interest
at games and on the television. In fact, basketball has switched its season
from winter, where it had to compete with AFL football, to the summer
season where it has relatively little competition from similar sports. This
move appears to have been successful with soccer also moving its season so
that it is not in direct competition with the whole of the AFL season.
Making use of the Age 'Green Guide' is a good way to collect data on how
much media coverage various sports receive in any given week. You might
choose to look at a specific sport and one other to see what sort of time
is allotted. You might also look at the NEWS or a sports program such as
SPORTS TONIGHT to see how much time a sport gets on the screen.
