'At rest' changes due to exercise View the video about heart rates and individual differences. Cardiac hypertrophy: an increase in the size of the left ventricle is seen (this takes at least 1 year of intense training before noticeable change is seen) Ventilation: fewer breaths are required for the same amount of air as a result of decreased residual volume/increased inspiratory reserve volume and vital capacity Haemoglobin blood volume: increases in both the concentration of haemoglobin and total blood volume A-VO2 difference: increases Capillary density: an increase is seen in the capillary density at the muscular level; slight increases in muscular hypertrophy are also seen decreases in blood cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides HDL (high density lipoproteins - the "good" fat) Blood pressure: both systolic and diastolic pressure decrease
