Health and Human Development - Socio-economic status
Socio-economic status
Profit margin rather than health determines the foods available in the
supermarket. Food items must have a fast turnover to be retained. For
example, supermarkets are beginning to stock a wider range of Asian foods
now that a larger percentage of the population is using these foods. Food
manufacturers have used the spices and flavours of many Asian foods to
create a range of products that are milder in flavour and acceptable to a
larger percentage of the population. Giant international food corporations
control the whole process of providing food from the grower to the
retailer. In this way, they have complete control over the pricing of
foods.
But all of these foods and services cost more to the consumer. More time
can be available for busy individuals and families if they plan their food
shopping; buy, prepare and store foods when there is time so that less
preparation time is required at busier times of the week; buy some foods
that have been minimally prepared, e.g. meat short cuts.
Low socio-economic families may not have the nutrition and health
knowledge to make the best food choices for the money they have available.
In some suburban areas, councils and voluntary support groups provide
programs to assist families to shop for food.
The amount of money you have also determines what you can buy. When money
is limited, the choice and variety of food is usually also limited.

costs is one of the most important factors when we select food.it is particularly important for the low-income families, students, and the elderly; it is not uncommon for these groups to spend 33% their total income on food. The cost of food varies according to, how much is bought at once-if there is storage space, large qualities are better buy. Whether the food is in season or locally produce. how much processing the food has undergone-pre- prepared marinated chicken skewers or bags of salad cost more.
place of purchase-if chosen carefully, food bought at a market or road side stall can save money, but there is usually no money back guarantee. store specials and supermarkets have their own label. Available resources; Time is a resource that commonly limits what we buy and prepare for meals while our knowledge and skills in cooking may become rusty over time without use. Resources can be interchanged, if you have the money, you can choose to have a meal from the restaurant. but if money is short you can use your skills, knowledge and food ingredients to make a meal. Time and Money can be used wisely by freezing and safely storing food that are in season, on sale or in large quantities then can be used immediately.
Occupation and finances; the type of a job a person does influences their food selection and it's social expectations are reflected in food choices. The income received from employment also determines the quality and quantity of food chosen.
Some of the people they can not buy healthy foods for economical reason, so how poor family can get healthy food without economic reason?
