Health and Human Development - Factors that affect food selection
Factors that affect food selection
Many factors influence where we eat, how we eat and why we eat what we do.
The most significant factor that influences our eating patterns is what we
learnt in childhood. That is one important reason why children should be
educated to eat regular, nutritionally adequate meals. Acquiring tastes for
highly salted foods or soft textured foods lacking in dietary fibre will
continue into adulthood and are risk factors for diet-related diseases.
Consider your own food choices. What appear to be the influences? How
varied are the foods?
How many of the foods have been the target of heavy advertising campaigns?
Are the foods mainly purchased ready-prepared?
