Health and Human Development - High sodium (salt) intake
High sodium (salt) intake
* (high blood pressure) can lead to more serious diseases such as
strokes, coronary heart disease and kidney failure. It is associated with a
high salt intake, though there are many other factors that predispose
towards hypertension, such as genetics, excess weight, obesity, high
alcohol consumption and low levels of physical activity.
* results from an imbalance in the electrolytes that control the
movement of substances into and out of cells. It is recognised as a bloated
appearance in the abdominal area, face, hands and feet. Oedema is commonly
associated with low protein diets, especially in young children in
developing countries.
Reduce the intake of processed foods and salted and cured meats. Avoid
adding sauce to foods and cut back on potato chips and other similarly
salty snack foods. Choose low-salt varieties of bread, margarine and other
foods. Try to lose the acquired taste for salt.

stroke , coronary heart disease and kidney failure
high sodium intake may increase your risk of developing renal stones, also known as kidney stones. The main cause of kidney stones is urinary calcium a mineral noted to increase in those with high sodium intake.
sodium plays a key role in balancing the level of fluid in our body by signaling to the kidneys when to retain water and when to get rid of water. High sodium intake can interfere with this delicate process. As explained by the World Action on salt and health, this strain on the kidneys can lead to kidney disease or exacerbate kidney problems in those already with the condition.
sodium and potassium have opposite effects on heart health, high sodium intake increase blood pressure, which can lead to heart disease. While high potassium intake can help relax blood vessels and excrete the sodium and decrease blood pressure. although blood pressure increases naturally with age, according to the American heart association, reducing your salt intake can help prevent your blood pressure from increasing too much.
Excess levels of sodium/salt may put you at risk for: High Blood Pressure, Stroke, Heart Failure, Osteoperosis, Stomach Cancer
A high sodium salt intake can also have negative effects on your appearance.with high levels of sodium in your body.
What is high sodium intake
high salt intake results in fluid retention that could lead to hypertension and oedema.
